Apple generated $2.1 billion or 13% of total Q3 revenues from iPad

That's $642 per iPad versus $631 per iPhone

Apple generated $2.1 billion or 13% of total Q3 revenues from iPad
Further detail arising from Apple's all-time record Q3 2010 figures has been a breakdown of where those revenues came from.

During the three month period ending June 26 (marking its launch period), Apple sold 3.27 million iPads.

These accounted for $2.1 billion, or 13 percent, of the company's $15.7 billion revenue total.

Little and large

In comparison, the 8.4 million iPhones sold accounted for $5.3 billion, or 34 percent of sales.

Interestingly, it was thought Apple would make a higher margin per iPhone sold than per iPad, because of its take of cell phone contracts.

For that reason, analysts expected to see a decline in the company's gross margin because of iPad's success. While it did fall from 39.1 percent compared to 40.9 percent in Q3 2009, and 41.7 percent in Q2 2010, this was less than predicted.

However, doing some simple maths on the figures, it's easy to see that in gross terms, Apple booked $642 of revenue per iPad sold versus $631 per iPhone.

Likely due to people buying more and higher priced iPad accessories than iPhone, it will be fascinating to see how these figures vary as iPad sales mature.
