Metal Gear on PSP boosts Konami's Q1 FY11 income 188%
As game businesses goes, Japanese publisher Konami (NYSE: KNM) certainly spread its bets.

Of course, it has the usual console business, and like many Japanese publisher an arcade business too. However, it also makes gambling products and owns health clubs.

Strange than that its Q1 2011 financials for the three months ending June 30 were saved by Sony's much maligned PSP portable.

Sales on the device - driven in the main by the release of Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker - accounted for 40 percent of Konami's Digital Entertainment unit sales; its largest sector by device by far. DS was next at 18 percent.

Unlike Europe and the US, in Japan PSP hardware and games continue to sell very well. Konami sold 1.27 million Metal Gear Solid games globally during the quarter.

Splash the cash

In terms of revenues, Digital Entertainment accounted of ¥25.0 billion ($291 million), of Konami's total Q1 revenues of ¥53.2 billion ($619 million), which overall was down five percent year-on-year.
Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker massively boosted profits however with operating income up 188 percent to ¥2.9 billion ($33.5 million).

Unsurprisingly perhaps considering its less than stellar performance on such platforms, Konami didn't mention mobile or iPad games during its report, nor list any future titles in its pipeline of releases.
