Announced during its Uplinq developer conference in June, Qualcomm's Augmented Reality SDK for Android is now available for download.
Offered through its QDevNet online developer network, the SDK enables developers to create content ranging from 3D tabletop gaming experiences on tabletops to interactive advertising and product packaging. The AR platform uses computer vision rather than GPS and phone compass approach used by some other technologies.
Qualcomm is also encouraging developers to get involved with its 2010 Augmented Reality Developer Challenge, which offers $200,000 in prize money for the best three apps.
Full details can see found at the AR Developer Challenge website.
Mixed up screen life
Companies such as Mattel, which developed a concept based on its Rock 'Em Sock 'Em game, and AR developer Ogmento are planning to use the SDK to develop commercial products.
"We received a very positive response to the Rock 'Em Sock 'Em project and as a result, we are moving forward with plans to commercialise the game and are now exploring the use of AR in other Mattel brands," said Andrew Cheesman, director of emerging digital technologies at Mattel.
"Qualcomm is making it easy for developers to create interactive 3D content for the real world," said Jay Wright, Qualcomm's director of business development.
"By making the Qualcomm AR SDK available at no charge, we are encouraging all developers to start building innovative applications and services today."
