Already employed in hundreds of console titles, Scaleform has revealed it is to add a whole host of features designed for smartphones to the latest version of its user interface graphics engine GFx.

The company claims version 4.0 will accelerate the development of graphically rich apps on both Android and iOS, giving developers access to its open Flash player SDK.

In theory, it should enable studios to foster inventive UIs and animated displays within their titles in a far easier fashion.

Smart design for smartphones

"The inclusion of advanced features such as the new multi-threaded rendering engine to accelerate mobile content brings Scaleform’s power and extensibility to a completely new market," said president and CEO Brendan Iribe.

"Not only can game developers familiar with Scaleform use it to create immersive mobile games and interfaces; any application developer can now use Scaleform to power graphically rich apps and custom user interfaces for many of the most popular mobile devices available today."

The company claims this is no quick conversion either, with GFx 4.0 designed to deal directly with the opportunities and issues smartphone platforms serve up.

As such, new features include a multi-threaded architecture and rendering engine, multi-touch support, stereoscopic 3D, and a mobile UI kit to help developers get up to speed quicker.

Scaleform is set to showcase GFx 4.0's at Mobile World Congress between February 14 and 17. More details can be found on the firm's website.
