It's not a surprise that games are doing well in the South Korean App Store given that the games category ban was recently lifted, just take a look at some of the figures relating to download rates.
In less than a week since the ban was lifted, apps listed in the Games category have gained 43 percent of the top 100 free apps. This percentage jumps to 50 percent when considering only paid content.
New category in town
Games have also taken seven slots out of the ten most popular free apps, including the top three positions. In terms of paid apps the breakdown is 50/50.
According to app store metrics outfit Distimo, Korea currently occupies third place on the list of highest free download volume per country on Apple's App Store. An admirable feat considering the small population of the country, but perhaps unsurprising given the Korean penchant for gaming.
Korean developers are also enjoying the new category, with Com2uS celebrating with a 99c game sale and Gamevil shooting up the top grossing charts.
