Finnish outfit Sulake is best known for its web social game Habbo Hotel, which currently has around 10 million monthly unique users.
However, its latest game is an iOS platformer called Niko, which is due to arrive on the App Store on 19 January.
The strategy behind this, and the release in 2011 of iOS game Lost Monkey (which is now coming to Android), is to engage Habbo's audience in new experiences, while also linking back to Sulake's core franchise.
From a distance
"2012 will be all about moving audiences across platforms," emphasised CEO of Sulake Paul LaFontaine.
"With Lost Monkey for iOS, we demonstrated that Habbo users very much liked the idea of receiving rewards within the mobile app and bringing them back to the online community.
"These new launches, Niko for iOS and Lost Monkey for Android, expand our efforts to move audiences in this way."
Sulake hasn't yet revealed full details of how Niko will hook back to Habbo Hotel, merely stating that it offers more complex interaction that the simple item unlocking of Lost Monkey.
Niko will be free-to-play for the first six levels, with a further 28 levels available for $1.99.
