Chatter may have pointed to the release of a smaller, sleeker 3DS Lite, but Nintendo's first play around with 3DS hardware has resulted in the unveiling of a larger, bulkier 3DS XL.
The new SKU, which will launch in Europe and Japan this July before hitting the US in August, boasts a 4.88-inch top screen.
It's a design that Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime claims helps games already launched on the platform "really shine."
Going large
The bottom screen has also been expanded to 4.18-inches, with 3DS XL also coming equipped with a 4GB SD card.
Nintendo believes such storage makes the new device the perfect vehicle for users looking to download games from the eShop - digital downloads not exactly 3DS's strong suit to date.
"The launch of Nintendo 3DS XL and the and New Super Mario Bros 2 on 19 August marks the beginning of a huge push for Nintendo 3DS that will last for the rest of the year, and beyond," said Fils-Aime.
Circling back
Critics have already pointed out the lack of a built in Circle Pad Pro an accessory launched for the original 3DS to aid game control is an oversight, with the device sporting the same single thumbpad on the left hand side as the original 3DS.
No pricing for Europe has yet been made public, but Japanese gamers will be able to pick up the handheld branded 3DS LL later on 28 July for ¥18,900 (around $235).
The handheld will finally hit the US the following month for $199.
