Gamestop-owned online gaming platform Kongregate has formed a $10 million fund to publish free-to-play mobile games from independent developers.
The fund will see Kongregate offer cash advances to qualifying developers, as well as monetisation and creative consultations.
Once a Kongregate-published game is launched, it will be promoted across Kongragate and Gamestop's various channels.
Kongregate will also manage advertising across third-party networks, handle PR duties and work with app stores in an effort to secure featured spots for its titles.
Konstancy
To spearhead this foray into mobile publishing, Kongregate has taken on former Zynga general manager Panayoti Haritatos as vice president of its new mobile division.
"Developers are increasingly finding it harder to get their games discovered through the different app stores," explained Haritatos.
"I personally faced these challenges in 2009 while managing my own game studio. Utilising the Kongregate platform made my games successful, which ultimately led to my studio being acquired by Zynga."
Gamestop claims that it will relaunch its mobile apps "as part of its commitment to mobile gaming."
The new apps will be designed to help boost discovery for mobile games, and will feature Kabam's The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-Earth.
