Even the most passionate developers would have to admit that individual games rarely serve as system sellers for either mobiles or tablets.
A conglomerate of top software, however, can make a big difference.
And so, it's somewhat surprising that it's taken Microsoft almost three years to deliver its first big exclusive Halo game for Windows Phone, with Halo: Spartan Assault announced today signalling a shift in strategy by the Redmond giant.
Winning with Windows
Spartan Assault, which is set between Halo 3 and Halo 4, will operate as a touch-based twin-stick shooter, and will also launch on Windows 8 devices when it hits the digital shelves in July.
"Halo: Spartan Assault features a unique fusion of touch and console-like controls for easy pick-up-and-play gaming, with the added flexibility of keyboard and mouse controls on Windows 8 PCs and tablets," detailed Microsoft in a press release.
"For fans who already have a prospering Spartan career aboard the UNSC Infinity, Halo: Spartan Assault lets you earn experience points, all-new achievements, and emblems for your Halo 4 Spartan, with additional integration features available after launch."
Microsoft has already refused to answer questions as to whether Spartan Assault will make its way to Android and iOS in the future, branding it as 'designed to take advantage of Windows' alone.
Nonetheless, it'll be interesting to see what impact this 343 Industries developed release can make on two platforms yet to win the public over, especially when saddled with a $6.99 price point.
