With the firm currently debuting the latest version of its graphics engine GFx at Mobile World Congress, Scaleform has announced it's been acquired by 3D software specialist Autodesk in a deal worth $6 million.
The takeover, which is expected to close before the end of April, will see the two parties' software integrated.
Mobile move
It's a move that, in VP of games, media and entertainment Marc Stevens' words, will equip Autodesk with the tools to "more rapidly develop immersive 3D and casual game experiences".
"The Scaleform team will bring a wealth of expertise in creating highly optimised runtime solutions for PCs, consoles and mobile devices," added Stevens.
"We expect the integration of Scaleform to allow us to innovate faster and help further improve the game creation process for online, console, and mobile development."
All go for GFx
Scaleform recently announced it would be adding a whole host of features aimed at smartphone platforms to GFx 4.0.
According to Scaleform president and CEO Brendan Iribe, the Autodesk buyout should aid its assault on mobile formats,
"Our combined technologies will not only provide game developers with an improved authoring environment and runtime solution, but will also apply to the broader interactive entertainment industry ranging from film to mobile to the web," Irie said.
"We will finally realize our long standing vision of integrating 2D and 3D authoring technology while continuing our commitment to deliver leading-edge real-time graphics solutions to our customers."
As a result of the deal, Iribe, Scaleform CTO Michael Antonov, and COO Marc Bennett will join Autodesk's leadership team.
