Eidos closes UK mobile games studio Rockpool

14 jobs go

Eidos closes UK mobile games studio Rockpool
Eidos has revealed that it's closing its Manchester-based mobile games studio, formerly known as Rockpool Games.

14 staff are losing their jobs in the closure, which is the latest studio to be affected by Eidos's wider cost-reduction strategy.

"As a company we need to focus our efforts on high-quality titles that will deliver long-term franchise value, and in these incredibly challenging and competitive times we need to pro-actively manage our cost base," Eidos told GamesIndustry.biz.

"This decision was a difficult one to make and we would like to thank these employees for their hard work and we wish them well in their future careers."

In truth, the news isn't a huge surprise. Eidos pulled out of the mobile games market last year, subsequently signing a distribution deal with EA Mobile. With no mobile roadmap, a mobile games studio was understandably low on Eidos' priorities.

Nevertheless, Rockpool was well-respected in the UK mobile development scene, so we hope its staff will find new positions quickly elsewhere in the industry.
