Aiming to encourage feature-rich development

RIM launches updated Java and web dev tools for BlackBerry
RIM has released a series of updated Java and web-based development tools as it looks to expand the content offered by thirdparty apps on its BlackBerry handsets.

The company says the new plug-in for Eclipse v1.1 and its web plug-in v2.0 will give studios the ability to create feature-rich apps for the platform, quickly and easily building widgets or Java apps that are tailor made to run on BlackBerry devices.

On a similar note, RIM states the BlackBerry Widget SDK v1.0 and Java SDK v5.0 will provide access to each handset's hardware features, native apps and system capabilities of the platform.

Upping the app ante

"The BlackBerry application platform continues to evolve tremendously and the new tool enhancements make developing applications for BlackBerry smartphones easier and faster than ever," said Alan Brenner, senior VP for BlackBerry .

RIM believes the new wealth of apps that arise from these updates will utilise the unique benefits of the BlackBerry platform. Developers are able to share information and interact with core or other thirdparty apps.

Brenner added, "We believe these enhanced tools will spur a new level of creativity and innovation as developers find new ways to leverage the unique power and integrated nature of the BlackBerry platform in order to bring useful, intelligent applications to the millions of BlackBerry smartphones users around the world."

Feature-rich

As well as the ability to create, debug, profile and simulate apps using simulators, actual devices or multiple versions of the OS, RIM states the Eclipse plug-in will let developers instantly load and run a modified app being debugged without needing a reset.

Likewise, the web plug-in will enable studios to create web apps and content using standard tech and programming languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript and AJAX.

OpenGL ES 1.0 support to create interactive 3D games is included in the Java SDK v5.0's spec sheet, as well as new pre-built UI components and location-based focused APIs to enable geolocation.

Finally, the new Widget SDK v1.0 will allow thirdparty apps to tap into standard features like the calendar, contacts, camera, maps, messaging, browser, files and location using GPS.

A full roster of features for all the updates can be sound on BlackBerry's developer website.
