The divide between console, PC and mobile games is becoming ever narrower, and so it is that Namco Bandai has decided to merge its two US divisions to create one entity that will work across all platforms.
In terms of technical changes this means Namco Networks America Inc (the mobile and web part) becomes subsumed under the main Namco Bandai Games America Inc brand.
In this way, the company says it will be able to leverage talent from both elements to develop and publish games across multiple platforms including all major video game consoles, Apple iOS, mobile, PC and the web.
All together now
"Namco Bandai Games America will not only continue to build upon its rich portfolio of immersive and interactive gaming titles, but will also further strengthen the company's position by expanding its presence in the social gaming space," it said in a press statement.
It certainly makes sense on the mobile side, where the iPhone division and the mobile division, which included Brew, Java, and all other smartphones, previously operated as separate divisions.
However with everything converging - not to mention Namco Bandai's own Unite social platform, which will deliver social connectivity across iPhone, iPad, PC, Mac, web, Android and feature phone - it makes complete sense.
"We strive to make games accessible to gamers across multiple platforms. Combining the companies' deep pools of talent and resources is the best way for us to achieve our goal of broadening our consumer base," said Kenji Hisatsune, president, CEO and COO of Namco Networks, who will serve as the president and CEO of the newly combined organisation.
"I am very excited about uniting these dynamic groups and look forward to delivering top-notch content that's appropriate for multiple gaming platforms and communities."
