With an aim to make a greater impact in the west, Chinese developer Cocoa China has closed its second funding round, worth $14 million.
The studio is best known for freemium hit Fishing Joy, which has amassed a userbase of 10 million across Android and iOS since it launched in July, and is a top grossing game in China.
The firm has also made a name for itself in its home country by playing host one of the largest iOS developer communities in China, giving it the potential to become a publisher or even offer platform and monetisation services.
Thirst for freemium
The round was led by Steamboat Ventures, with the Chinese arm of Sequoia Capital - an investor in US social studio Pocket Gems - and Northern Light Venture Capital, which had already injected $1.2 million into the firm in a previous funding round, also involved.
The Cocoa China investment is just the latest in a season of funding rounds and acquisitions of freemium and social gaming studios.
CocoaChina is also playing host to China iOS Mobile Internet Developer Conference, which will kick off on August 27 and feature MD of Pocket Gamer's publisher Steel Media, Chris James.
