UPDATE: We soon discovered that Amazon had probably launched the Appstore for Android globally by accident, for the company shut off access to it from non-US devices 24 hours later. Presumably, someone at Amazon got the elbow.
Original story follows:
It's taken much longer we initially hoped but Amazon seemed to have rolled out its Appstore for Android globally.
There's been no official confirmation yet but the UK store is definitely enabling downloads - both paid and free.
Other confirmed territories now online include Australia, Holland and Indi,a so it seems likely that the store has been opened for European and other key countries.
The news comes as Amazon is expected to officially announce its tablet plans with a $250 7-inch Android-powered Kindle-branded device rumoured to be released in November.
Store for all
The Amazon Appstore for Android was originally launched for only American Amazon account holders in March.
Download volumes of paid games aren't thought to have been particularly high to-date, and there's been plenty of controversy over Amazon's terms and conditions for developers, but the store's free app of the day is known to be generating large numbers of downloads.
Now, hopefully, with the content available to hundreds of millions of additional consumers, we'll really be able to see how Amazon's store fits into the wider, fragmented Android store ecosystem.
To access the appstore you have to download the app from Amazon's website and enable your Android device to download and install content from "unknown sources".
You can read our Hands on impressions with the store here.
