Benchmarking tests conducted by PCWorld.com show the new iPad significantly outperforming a range of rival tablets, including the Tegra 3-equipped Asus Transformer Prime.
The tests were performed using gaming benchmark tool GLBenchmark 2.1.2.
Across four separate tests the third generation iPad consistently generated the highest benchmark scores.
It's interesting to note that the iPad 2 came second in every one of these tests, winning out against the Toshiba Excite 10LE, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (4G LTE version), and the Asus EE Pad Transformer Prime.
There are various different ways you can text the hardware (as you can see from the graphs on PCWorld), but while it's clear that iPad hardware is the current fastest, what's perhaps more significant is how close the iPads are in terms of performance.
One example is shown below.
The real world
Games optimised for the new iPad's display also shone in hands-on tests, with the high resolution of the device's screen apparently making an appreciable difference to visual quality.
However, PCWorld noted that during hands-on testing of games which are available for both Android and iOS (but not optimised for the new iPad), the Tegra 3 Android slate seemed to render them with the most detail.
So the message is a mixed one.
Apple's hardware wins out in pure benchmarking tests, but in the field it would seem that Tegra 3 and the new iPad are more evenly matched.
