China’s iOS App Store revenues hit record $1.7 billion in Q3 2016 as staggering growth continues

The Chinese iOS App Store earned a record $1.7 billion in revenue between July 1st to September 30th. A new report from App Annie shows the marketplace made more than the US and Japan App Stores, which both brought in less than $1.5 billion. In Q3 2016 Chinese consumers spent more than five times the amount they had previously spent two years prior on the App Store.

Here are the top 20 Chinese Android app stores

Tencent’s mobile marketplace MyApp is the most widely used third-party Android app store in China, according to a new report. Games market intelligence firm Newzoo said the storefront covers 23.56% of the market thanks to Tencent’s reach through its apps such as QQ, WeChat and Qzone. In Tencent’s Q2 2016 financial report, it noted WeChat and Weixing had a combined 807 million monthly active users. The other top third-party Android app stores were 360 Mobile Assistant (17.8%), Baidu Mobile Assistant (16.71%), Xiaomi’s Miui App Store (14.97%), and the Huawei App Store (11.56%).

Chinese investors raise $850 million to fund Tencent's Supercell acquisition

A consortium of companies has raised $850 million to support Tencent’s $8.6 billion acquisition of Clash Royale developer Supercell. The group of co-investors includes Chinese state-owned investment companies AVIC Capital and CITIC Capital MB, as well as Greater Global Investments Limited, SinoRock Star II Limited and SPDBI Royale. The consortium will indirectly hold a stake of 76.9% in the Finnish developer. Tencent plans to acquire 84.3% of Supercell in total.

Mobile growth picks up the slack from PC decline in Changyou’s games business

Chinese online games publisher Changyou suffered a year-on-year decline in revenues of 28% during the first financial quarter ending September 30th. The company reported total revenues of $136 million for Q3. The firm’s online games business suffered as revenues tumbled 35% year-on-year to $99 million. This was also a dip of 1% from the previous quarter. MAUs for the publisher’s PC games dropped 34% year-on-year to 2.7 million, while MAUs for its mobile titles grew 17% to 2.8 million.

DeNA dissolves US subsidiary as Western games fail to meet expectations

DeNA Global and ngmoco LLC have been dissolved as DeNA pulls back from developing games in the West. A filing to the Tokyo Stock Exchange reveals the company’s titles developed for Western markets had not met expectations. As a result, DeNA will close its San Francisco offices and will now change its strategy from having internal studios to collaborations with external partners. DeNA plans to focus its attention on making games for Japan and growing its business in China.
