As iPhone game developers know well, their games can't access the music library on Apple's handset to let people use their own songs within gameplay (as opposed to simply having them playing, which is possible).
However, developer TheMusic has found a way around it for its new iPhone music game BeatRider Touch. The game is a very Guitar Hero-esque rhythm game, which involves tapping notes as they fall down the screen.
But here's the thing: players can sign up to the BeatRider community from within the game, and then visit its website on their computer to upload up to 20 MP3 songs of their choice. They then go back into the game to synchronise it, letting them play along to their uploads.
It's very nifty. However, with the iPhone 3.0 software only weeks away, it's not a long-term solution, since one of the new APIs available to developers in that will finally let them access the iPhone music library.
We're assuming BeatRider will switch to that system in an update, as getting people to upload their own tunes is somewhat more fiddly.
