If Apple's view that Galaxy Tab has no market has some truth to it, then Samsung is doing a more than adequate job of fostering sales out of thin air.
That's based on the latest stats reported by Korean news agency Yonhap News that puts lifetime sales at 2 million units worldwide double the number Samsung itself reported back on December 3.
In short, it means a little under 130,000 Galaxy Tabs are finding their way into consumer's homes each and every week.
Counting the competition
Breaking the figures down, the site claims around 500,000 units have been sold in Europe, with North America accounting for 350,000 and Asia 330,000.
In comparison to iPad, however, Galaxy Tab still has - in theory - a long way to go. Apple sold 14.8 million units in 2010, making Samsung's current tally look somewhat less impressive.
Nevertheless, given Galaxy Tab's performance at retail is far from dire, Samsung's success could well serve as evidence that there's money to be made from the expanding tablet market, even if you're not top dog.
Tipping Tab's successor
It's no surprise, then, that its sequel is set to be announced imminently.
A leaked schedule detailing Samsung's announcements at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February explicitly points to the unveiling of Galaxy Tab 2, as well as the successor to the firm's popular Android smartphone Galaxy S.
The document points to February 13 as Galaxy Tab 2's big day, suggesting it won't be long before Motorola's Android 3.0 powered Xoom due to launch in Q1 2011 has some serious company.
