HP has finally come to some sort of conclusion about webOS, deciding to open source the technology.
The remnant of its $1.2 billion acquisition of Palm in April 2010, HP dropped support for webOS phones and tablets in August, albeit under the guidance of now ex-CEO Léo Apotheker.
He's since been replaced by Meg Whitman, who commented, "webOS is the only platform designed from the ground up to be mobile, cloud-connected and scalable.
"By contributing this innovation, HP unleashes the creativity of the open source community to advance a new generation of applications and devices."
All together now
As for HP's involvement with the OS, it says it plans to continue to be active in its further development and support, as well as investing in its future.
With the help of the open source community, it reckons there's "the opportunity to significantly improve applications and web services for the next generation of devices".
HP also will contribute ENYO, which is webOS' application framework, to the community in the near future alongside other components.
