As if the prospect of Pocket Gamer's annual awards at the start of March wasn't enough for developers to contend with, GDC also plays host to two ceremonies of its own.
The winners of both the Game Developers Choice awards (confusingly GDC for short) and the International Games Festival awards (IGF) were revealed at GDC 2011 in San Francisco, and it's pleasing to report that mobile titles featured at both.
Three-way tie
Of course, that's primarily because both GDC and IGF come with dedicated handheld or mobile categories, but, nonetheless, those at ZeptoLab and Ratloop have reason enough to celebrate.
Indeed, in the top handheld category at the GDC awards, ZeptoLab's Cut the Rope published by Chillingo beat out handheld hits such as God of War: Ghost of Sparta and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker on PSP, Dragon Quest IX on Nintendo DS and fellow mobile smash Game Dev Story to take home the title.
Om Nom's neverending hunger didn't come out on top at the IGF awards, however. Instead, iPhone puzzler Helsing's Fire by Ratloop was named best mobile game, picking up $2,500 for its troubles.
Evidence of the breadth of quality currently enjoyed by mobile gamers, neither of the above was named as Pocket Gamer's game of the year earlier in the month, however, with Firemint's Real Racing 2 scooping that particular accolade.
