Fortumo has become the first mobile payments company to announce support for Windows 8, as the firm expands its mobile operator billing solution to include Microsoft's new desktop and tablet OS.
The product enables developers to add in-app mobile payments to any app that's sold through the Windows Store whether the device is running Windows 8 or Windows RT and supports 32 languages, 45 currencies and is available in almost 80 countries worldwide.
Branching out
While Fortumo's coverage in the US and Western Europe is obviously of benefit to developers, operator billing is particularly useful as an alternative to credit and debit cards in developing markets many of which Fortumo supports.
"With the launch of Windows 8, developers now have an additional platform on which to build and distribute their applications," explained Fortumo co-founder Rain Rannu.
"We will be helping them to develop new revenue streams from the get-go.
"With mobile operator billing in 80 countries, Fortumo can provide seamless payment experiences for Windows users without a need to register or have a credit card."
Founded in 2007, Fortumo has provided mobile operator billing for in-app payments on Android and web apps for some time now, and has signed up more than 70,000 mobile payment merchants to date.
