With Google's acquisition of Motorola spooking current Android licensees such as Samsung, its decision to post a comparative breakdown between the OS and its bada platform seems a little loaded.
"This document is to help an Android developer begin developing applications for bada. It covers important similarities and differences between the two platforms", the post on the bada developers blog begins.
Overhead versus complexity
In this context, it contains plenty of detail for those with the assumed "familiarity with Java and C++".
For laymen, however, the interesting take away is Samsung's view that while "Android has greater generality at the cost of higher overhead and more complexity, bada's streamlined, targeted features offer less overhead and (in most cases) complexity".
That's because "bada draws on Samsung's years of mobile device experience, and is streamlined to make the most common mobile design patterns easier to implement, while still retaining the power to address more complex problems."
Certainly, it will be fascinating to see whether Samsung becomes more active in its promotion of bada development in light of Google's Motorola deal, particularly as it seemed the OS was being downgraded by the success of Android devices such as the Galaxy family of smartphones and tablets.
