Owners of the Palm-Pre handset will probably know that when they connect their phone to their PC, iTunes recognises it as an iPod. Its a cheeky bit of programming by the Palm guys, and one that Apple was none too happy about.
So unhappy, in fact, that it's just launched an iTunes update (version 8.2.1) that cuts Palm-Pre out of the loop.
The signs were there when Apple added a page to their support section titled iTunes and unsupported third-party digital media players, where they basically told Palm that they knew their game and were going to hunt them down like dogs.
Not quite in those terms, of course. They said things like Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players. But we like to think thats what they meant.
