As part of its present challenge, FIVE's The Gadget Show pitted a professional game developer against an indie coder in an attempt to score the highest download figures for an iPhone application.
The challenge also tested the popularity of social networking applications against free-to-play games, with the latter proving that games enjoy a lot more attention from the iPhone install base.
The challenge tested whether small social apps or small free games were more potent on the iPhone, and with Biker Blast-Off landing almost one and a quarter million downloads, and the indie developed Social Beacon app receiving just over 4,000, the message seems clear.
"This challenge was a fantastic experience for the team and were absolutely overjoyed that Biker Blast-Off has won," says Mediatonic's Paul Croft.
"What this actually proves is that not only will a free game always get more attention than a free utility, but also that production values are critical to any applications success. When it comes to small games, a keen sense of what makes a compelling, quick-fire play experience is absolutely key."
