Continuing the momentum of Google's mobile platform, device software optimisation company Wind River has announced the release of the commercial version its open source Android, optimised for Texas Instrument's OMAP 3 platform.
This includes ongoing optimisation for TI's OMAP34x and OMAP36x platforms, as used in the Motorola Droid, Palm Pre, and Nokia N900 phones.
"Wind River Platform for Android was developed for operators and handset manufacturers challenged to consistently achieve time and quality performance metrics as Android devices are brought to market," says Chris Perret, vice president, of Wind River's mobile and automotive solutions group.
"By delivering a commercial Android platform, we are offering a fast way for them to innovate and differentiate without the risks common to open source software,"
The validated, fully compliant software technology, which is rigorously tested using the Android Compatibility Test Suite, is available with pre-integrated software from partners Adobe (Flash), PacketVideo (OpenCORE), and Red Bend's firmware over-the-air updating and device management software.
It also comes with enhanced user interface and personalisation options for such branding functions as boot-up splash screen, locked idle screen, termination screens, and additional gesture-based choices for core phone functions.
Wind River Platform for Android is now available to customers worldwide. Additional details are available here.
