Despite apps for both iPhone and iPad being delivered via the App Store, the latest report from analytics firm Distimo shows there are distinct differences between the two platforms when it comes to purchase behaviour.
Of most note for iPhone developers is the assertion that games now dominate the higher echelons of the paid market, with Distimo claiming nine out of ten of the top paid apps on the format in the US are games.
Not so Angry Birds
Angry Birds tops the paid apps countdown, with Doodle Jump coming in second and Fruit Ninja third.
While independent studios such as Lima Sky and Rovio are, as a result, major players in the market, Distimo's numbers suggest the bigger publishers EA, Activision and the like are increasingly getting to grips with gaming on iPhone.
Indeed, Distimo claims three of the top ten games on the platform were published by EA, while Activision's Guitar Hero is also a solid performer, enjoying more in-app purchases than any other paid app across the course of the month.
In-app on iPad
In-app purchases appear to have a greater presense on iPad in general, however, with 10 percent of apps on the marketplace offering in-app goods in one form or another.
That compares favourable with iPhone, where 2 percent of apps come with in-app purchases.
"The higher percentage of applications with in-app purchases in the Apple App Store for iPad may be caused by the fact that this store became available after in-app purchases were introduced, while in-app purchases were not available when the Apple App Store for iPhone was introduced," Distimo summarises.
Multimedia apps magazines, newspapers etc also have a greater presence on iPad, explaining the greater prevalence for in-app purchases on the format.
Only one game Pinball HD features in June's top ten paid apps on iPad countdown, according to Distimo.
Games, too, are less visable on rivals formats; no games are listed in either BlackBerry's or Android's paid or free apps countdowns, while seven of the top ten paid apps on the Ovi Store are games, three of the top ten on Windows Marketplace for Mobile and one of the top ten on Palm's App Catalogue.
