MWC 2011: Scoreloop announces support for Windows Phone 7

Cross platform gaming gains new player

MWC 2011: Scoreloop announces support for Windows Phone 7
The dream mobile gaming scenario - for consumers, anyway - in which hardware agnostic platforms and apps permit real-time multiplayer draws ever nearer.

Munich-based company Scoreloop is one such social initiative seeking to turn that fantasy into reality, recently revealing it secures 1 million new users per week, and delivered 100 million game sessions in 2010 across Android and iOS.

Now, Scoreloop has added a further string to its cross-platform bow by announcing support for Windows Phone 7.

Spreading the seed

Thanks in part to last week's smartphone partnership with Nokia, the buzz around Microsoft's fledgling mobile operating system has been second only to Android at Mobile World Congress.

The arrival of Scoreloop could help the Redmond software giant maintain this momentum and accelerate interest in social gaming on Windows Phone 7, bringing as it does easy integration of leaderboards, challenges, and virtual currency.

It's a particularly interesting development, if only for the fact that Windows Phone 7's integration with Xbox Live had pointed towards a platform devoid of third-party game networks. Scoreloop will be the first to take on Microsoft at its own game.

Ringing endorsement

"Windows Phone 7 is an important step in our goal to encourage and support connected gaming across the entire mobile landscape," said Marc Gumpinger, Scoreloop CEO.

"As the first cross-platform social gaming ecosystem to add support for Windows Phone 7 this means we can offer the largest reach, greater revenue potential, and increase the impact of developers using the Scoreloop SDK."

Given Scoreloop already operates on iOS, Android, and bada, interest from developers looking to set up cross-platform play is likely to be high, though the company has confirmed that early access to the SDK will be limited to a set number of developers.

Those looking to get involved are advised to email Scoreloop on wp7 [at] scoreloop [dot] com.
