Apple has announced its new version of the Mac operating system, Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, will embrace several features only previously seen on iOS devices, including the Notification Center, iMessages, and Game Center.
Game Center for Mac will function much as it does on iOS devices, allowing users to view online leaderboards, track achievements, and add friends.
It will also allow players to engage in online cross-platform multiplayer, as games written specifically for Game Center will support multiplayer match-ups between Mac and iOS users.
Lock the gates
It would seem that Apple is more willing now than it has been in the past to push Game Center, which has more than 67 million users, into the spotlight.
Furthermore, Mountain Lion is set to include a security feature called GateKeeper, which at its highest safety settings will only allows programs downloaded from the Mac App Store to be installed.
It looks as though Apple is positioning its App Store as a means for users to avoid malware, with App Store developers sure to benefit from any move the Mac makes towards a walled garden setup.
