Nokia has announced that it will begin to roll out the 41 megapixel PureView 808 to select markets this May, with the Symbian handset launching first in India and Russia.
Unveiled at the 2012 Mobile World Congress - where it picked up the 'Best New Mobile Handset' award - Nokia's PureView handset is equipped with a 41 megapixel sensor and Carl Zeiss optics.
It also boasts what's dubbed 'pixel oversampling technology', which captures 7 pixels of information and condenses it into '1 perfect pixel'.
Imaging experience
It's technology the Finnish firm has previously confirmed it will look to migrate to its Windows Phone range in the future, with commentators suggesting the PureView 808 is serving as something of a test run.
"PureView has completely raised the bar on imaging performance for the whole smartphone industry - and Nokia is not stopping here," explained Nokia's head of smart devices, Jo Harlow.
"We're going to carry on developing PureView for our future smartphones in ways that will again revolutionize the imaging experience."
No dates for a launch in North America or Europe have yet been given.
