We'd already heard that Nokia was considering adapting its tablet operating system Maemo for a new range of smartphones, phasing out the S60 series.
According to the German edition of the Financial Times, it could be prepared to go one step further and drop the Symbian system completely. The paper quotes a source close to Nokia as saying, Symbian is much too cumbersome to keep up with modern operating systems. We have to react.
There is a strong industry trend led by Apple and the iPhone to streamline the firmware for handheld devices, where previously manufacturers had aimed for a more complete, detailed, and resource intensive desktop-style operating systems.
There has been no official word from Nokia on the subject, though pictures of the forthcoming N900 handset have recently been leaked out - the first feature rich Nokia device to carry the Linux-based Maemo system.
