Sony Ericsson's recent financials demonstrated that while the company is shipping less mobile devices, its Android-oriented smartphone strategy seems to be working.
Indeed, according to CTO Jan Uddenfeldt, as interviewed by Mobile World Live, the company is looking to maximise that situation.
"We are on the right track with Android. We are number 3 or 4 [OEM] in that market," he said, when asked about Sony Ericsson's ranking as a mobile manufacturer, adding, "We have the ambition to be the number 1 on Android."
On the bandwagon
Uddenfeldt explained his confidence as partly being due to Sony Ericsson's commitment to supporting the latest version of the OS.
"We have six products now on Android Gingerbread, and no one is close to that," he said. Synergies with Sony cameras and display technology were cited as another strength.
He also pointed out that as Android is the fastest growing mobile OS, being number 1 in that market would trigger a remarkable turnaround in the company's fortunes.
"It's very clear. We are an Android-based company and we are seeing really fantastic growth; a seven-fold increase in the number of [Android] devices if you compared 2014 to last year. There will be more than 400 million devices and [Android will have] a 55 percent market share," he predicted.
"The open ecosystem really drives this. We will always keep our eyes open to other products. We have done Windows phones in the past, so we can pick it up ... but we aren't launching any Windows products for this year."
