LG looks to bolster Optimus 3D app library with game converter for 2D titles

LG looks to bolster Optimus 3D app library with game converter for 2D titles
A smart way of boosting the handset's library, or last minute attempt to save its much maligned 3D venture?

Either way, the unveiling of a new 3D game converter for the Optimus 3D is a sign LG isn't willing to give up on the handset just yet, despite calls for the company to sell off its mobile division as a result of its failure to gain traction at the tills.

Gagging the gimmick

The new converter is being pitched as a quick an easy way for developers to reach the phone's userbase, allowing consumers to play 2D titles in 3D when it's up and running.

"Far from being a gimmick, LG's 3D Game Converter automatically recognises the depth information based on the location of each object and separates the 2D graphic images for each eye," said LG's mobile platform architect Dr. Henry Nho.

"Using the existing depth information, the 3D Game Converter generates two different images - one for the foreground and one for the background."

Fifty Fifty

Around 50 compatible games will be delivered through the converter initially, with a further 50 titles being lined up before the year is out.

The converter itself, which will receive its first demo at IFA 2011 in Berlin, is set to launch as part of the handset's new maintenance release, due in October.
