While Epic president Mike Capps was wowing the crowds at Apple's press conference with Infinity Blade 2, company founder and CEO Tim Sweeney was breaking the real news at the Adobe MAX 2011 conference in LA.
Announcing that Unreal Engine 3 will now support Flash 11, he demoed the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 shooter Unreal Tournament 3 running in-browser.
Flash, not Gordon
Flash 11 is hardware-accelerated using Adobe's Molehill (now known as the Stage 3D) API and also supports 64-bit operating systems natively.
In this way, it offers a 1,000 times faster 2D and 3D graphics rendering performance compared to Flash Player 10.
And, significantly, Stage 3D has been authored specifically for mobile devices, although at present, it's only available for desktops.
"With UE3 and Flash, games built for high-end consoles can now run on the web or as Facebook apps, reaching an enormous user base," said Sweeney.
"This totally changes the playing field for game developers who want to widely deploy and monetise their games."
