Google CEO Larry Page has revealed the firm's much anticipated $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility has been completed a whole nine months after the move was announced.
As expected, Motorola CEO Sanjay Iha has immediately stepped down from his post, with Google SVP Dennis Woodside taking up the position in response.
Arm's length
Included as part of the deal is a significant portfolio of patents that Google will add to its now sizeable stores.
Just what motivated the deal, however whether a move for the firm's patent library, or an intention to control Android's hardware through its new subsidiary remains unclear.
Back in October 2011, senior Google VP Andy Rubin promised that a Google-owned Motorola would be run "at arm's length."
Nevertheless, commentators have been quick to question whether the installation of Woodside as the manufacturer's CEO suggests this strategy may has been revised.
Turning the Page
"As a company who made a big, early bet on Android, Motorola has become an incredibly valuable partner to Google," said Page of the deal.
"Sanjay Jha, who was responsible for building the company and placing that big bet on Android, has stepped down as CEO.
"I would like to thank him for his efforts and am tremendously pleased that he will be working to ensure a smooth transition as long-time Googler Dennis Woodside takes over as CEO of Motorola Mobility."
