Pokemon Go saw a 35 per cent increase in active users between May and now.
Niantic claimed in a Summer 2018 Recap that regular community events have helped bring “tens of millions” of players to Pokemon Go.
The AR studio also reported that since adding friend and trading features to its flagship title, over 113 million friendships had been formed, sending 2.2 billion total gifts between each other.
Positive power
Alongside the announcement, Niantic also announced a partnership with community engagement non-profit The Knight Foundation.
The company has prepared Open Street events in Charlotte, North Carolina on September 30th and Macon, Georgia on October 7th, to integrate Pokemon Go with tours across the two cities.
The partnership hopes to encourage a collaboration between augmented reality technology and civic engagement efforts, during what Niantics sees as a climate of division.
Niantic’s John Hanke wrote: “while the headlines are filled with examples of technology being used to divide us, our experiences this summer deepen our conviction that technology can be harnessed to enhance our lives in a positive way and bring us all closer together and strengthen our connection with the communities where we live and play.”
