A report on the video games market from CSMG suggests that service providers - ISPs and mobile operators - are well positioned to capture a greater share of the market in the coming years.
"The expansion of casual games, simpler user interfaces and the proliferation of innovative business models is broadening the gamer demographic," says chairman and CEO Rich Nespola.
"The timing is ripe for service providers to hedge the business cycle by capturing the robust opportunities to grow the mobile gaming market."
Really? Not to be rude, but operators have pretty much had the mobile games market to themselves for years now, but it's only now the likes of Apple and Google are getting involved that the buzz has returned.
The report highlights the "scalable network infrastructure, established subscriber base, sophisticated billing systems and bundled product portfolios" as the key advantages that service providers have.
Meanwhile, it also suggests that for mobile gaming specifically, "operators have the opportunity to create a standards based mobile gaming marketplace".
Without wishing to discount the good work being done by many operators, games firms reading this would be forgiven for thinking that the operators have had that opportunity for some time, and haven't delivered on it.
ISPs may be about to take a larger role in the fixed-line gaming world, but to suggest that mobile operators will be the driving force in mobile from now on seems a curious conclusion.
Anyway, you can find more details about the report here.
