iPhone and iPod touch owners may have downloaded more than one billion apps collectively, but how does this break down for individuals?
Dividing one billion by the 37 million iPhone and iPod touch users results in an average of around 27 apps per person, but TechCrunch has a really interesting post based on data from Compete, that breaks this down compared to other smartphone platforms.
Here's the key chart:
And as you can see, iPhone owners are significantly more likely to download more apps than rival platforms - 18 per cent have downloaded 16-20, 10 per cent have downloaded 21-30, and 17 per cent have downloaded more than 30 apps.
The hope will be that RIM's proportions will change thanks to the launch of its BlackBerry App World, while Palm will be hoping the soon-to-launch Pre handset will boost sales on its existing app store.
Even so, the research is more evidence to back up our theory that it's not the number of game downloaders that's important for a platform, but how many games they're downloading, and how regularly.
Meanwhile, a separate finding of Compete's research is that iPhone users are willing to pay slightly less for their apps than other platforms. Although what the 16 per cent of Motorola users who'd pay $50+ for apps are smoking, we don't know...
