While much of 2010 anticipation is focused on Google's Android mobile OS, BlackBerry manufacturer Research In Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM) underlined its current market strength with an impressive set of Q3 FY10 financials.
Revenue for the three months ending November 28, was up 41 percent year-on-year to $3.92 billion.
During this period RIM shipped around 10.1 million devices and added 4.4 million subscribers.
Its total global user base is now around 36 million, concentrated mainly in North and Latin American.
Net income was up 59 percent to $628 million, and cashflow from Q3 operations was $1.1 billion. The company holds $2.4 billion in cash, cash equivalents and investments.
The revenue breakdown for the quarter was approximately 82 percent from the sale of devices, 14 percent for services, 2 percent for software and 2 percent for other revenue.
"We are pleased to report record shipments of more than 10 million BlackBerry smartphones during the third quarter with higher than expected revenue, earnings and subscriber growth," said Jim Balsillie, RIM's co-CEO.
"RIM is experiencing a great start to the holiday buying season and the strong Q3 results and Q4 outlook clearly reflect the strength of our diversified product portfolio as well as the success of our efforts to expand into broader customer segments and new geographies while maintaining our strong position in North America."
Thanks to the continued strong performance of devices such as the Storm 2 and the new Curve family, the company expects to add between 4.4 to 4.7 million subscribers during Q4, with predicted revenue in the region $4.2 to $4.4 billion.
