It's not just independent developers who attempt to make waves in an industry dominated by large corporations. The platforms their apps are downloaded from are doing the same thing.
It's a market lead by big, branded players, but that hasn't stopped independent mobile app store Mobango from announcing a 500 percent increase in downloads in the 12 months leading up to December 2009.
CEO Fabio Pezzotti claims the success can be put down to good, old fashioned, hard graft.
"Mobango prides itself on hard work, innovation and loyalty to its global community," he explains.
"Facilitating a reliable, cost-effective and fast way for mobile app providers to distribute content to millions of cross-platform mobile users globally remains at the heart of our work."
Mobango also cites its Pay Promoted Download (PDP) model as a catalyst to its ascent. PDP enables developers to pay for sweet spots on the store, as well as the targeting of consumers by nationality and phone model.
The surge itself represents a major step forward for the service, Mobango claiming such figures make it the fastest growing independent app store on the globe - 23 million downloads in December alone.
To put that in some context, rival service GetJar claims to be second only to the App Store in terms of sheer numbers, 1.7 million downloads per day, while Nokia's Ovi Store is doing 1 million a day.
Mobango hopes to muddy the waters in this fight however, putting a spin on the standard app store model.
As well as its free apps, the store incorporates social networking elements to encourage user created content, with subscribers able to share their own apps.
Mobango hosts over 20,000 cross-platform mobile applications, which work on Symbian, Android, Flash Lite, Palm, Java, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile platforms.
