One of the most rampant rumours on the run up to Apple's revealing of its large-form touchscreen tablet was its name. The iSlate and iPad were both bandied around, and the public seemed to groan inwardly when it turned out Steve Jobs had opted for the latter.
Fujitsu is also interested in Apple's branding of the tablet, since it already has a mobile product on the market from 2002 called the iPad, as it explained to the New York Times.
"Its our understanding that the name is ours," said Masahiro Yamane, director of Fujitsus public relations division. He went on to say that Fujitsu was consulting with its lawyers over what steps would be taken next. "Mobile is a keyword for Fujitsus iPad, too," Yamane added.
A similar dispute occurred when Apple registered the name iPhone, which Cisco Systems had a claim to. A settlement was eventually agreed.
It'll take some serious legal wangling for Apple to circumnavigate this copyright claim. Or some serious money. Or both.
