In the US, Sony's PS Vita is being outsold by the ageing Nintendo DS by nearly 2:1.
In Japan, the Vita is currently being outsold by its own predecessor: the seven-year-old PSP.
And in Europe, the PSP has been consistently outperforming the Vita for roughly seven months. To put that in perspective, the PS Vita has only been available in Europe for eight months.
All this is according to Nintendo. The company released an online briefing to coincide with the publication of its latest financial results yesterday, and the presentation is accompanied by hardware sales estimates for Japan, the US and Europe.
The competition
When you compare the Vita's performance to its current-generation rival the Nintendo 3DS the picture for Sony becomes even more troubling.
It's clear that Sony's latest handheld is being outsold by at least 2:1 in every major territory.
This is made all the more remarkable by the fact that the 3DS is still performing below expectations itself.
3DS sales may be up 65 percent against last year, but Nintendo downgraded its financial forecast yesterday in response to weaker than expected sales overseas.
