Cloud gaming outfit Agawi has announced a partnership with chip manufacturer Marvell designed to bring its game streaming platform to smart TVs running Android.
The firms used CES 2013 in Las Vegas to unveil the deal, with Agawi's CloudPlay integrated onto Marvell's Armada 1500 HD Media SoC.
As a result, all devices equipped with the Armada 1500 chipset will have the power to run CloudPlay.
It's an interesting development given the current enthusiasm for Android-based micro-consoles such as the Ouya, GameStick and Nvidia's Project Shield and one that could threaten their popularity if widely implemented.
Pulling out the rug
Said collaboration will also enable OEMs to launch consumer hardware with a preinstalled solution for "console-quality PC gaming."
Consumer demand for a low-cost Android-based un-console could be threatened if TVs and set-top boxes already provide similar functionality out of the box.
"This is an elegant cloud gaming solution that any TV device manufacturer or operator can integrate into their products and services," explained Agawai co-founder Rajat Gupta.
"Now it's even possible to offer Agawi's instant game streaming as a preloaded application on smart TVs and the like.
"By making Agawi CloudPlay accessible via Marvell's hardware platform, we're opening up a world of opportunities for gaming on connected smart devices."
A smart TV implementation was the focus of the announcement, but the partners noted that Blu-ray players, set-top boxes and even HDMI dongles could all use Marvell's SoC to power Agawi's game streaming platform.
