The contest, formally known as the Digital Innovation Contest - Games, aims to discover and encourage the growth of UK start-ups in the gaming industry.
There are five projects - each worth £25,000 - up for grabs, each of which has been backed by various high-profile companies; notably Google Chrome team, Intel, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Crytek UK, Odeon Cinemas, and Pinewood Studios.
Five challenges
Each partner company brings a unique challenge to the Digital Innovation Contest - Games competition, and in order to secure a portion of the prize funding applicants will need to propose innovative solutions to the following challenges:
- 'Second-screen Use in a Game' - SCEE
- 'New Markets and Perceptual Computing - Intel
- 'Wider Games Distribution on Mobile Web - Google Chrome
- 'Open Street Map Data - Crytek UK
- 'Games And Cinema ODEON Cinemas and Pinewood Studios
The Technology Strategy Board notes that all applicants will retain their intellectual property.
Speaking on the opportunity, IC Tomorrow Programme Manager Matt Sansam notes that the opportunity for start-ups is bigger than just the prize money.
"Not only is there a total of £125,000 of funding to create and develop prototypes, there's also an excellent opportunity to work with some of the key global players in the games sector," he said.
