Microsoft unveils Surface successors, though gaming takes a back seat

100,000 apps available for Windows 8.1

Microsoft unveils Surface successors, though gaming takes a back seat
Microsoft has used a press event in New York to lift the lid on two new tablets, the Surface and Surface Pro 2.

The two new devices – sequels to Microsoft's original Surface RT and Surface Pro tablets – boast upgraded specs and lower RRPs, but appear to be aimed more at the business market than gamers.

Integration with Office and Skype led the line during the big reveal, with the latter coming with a year's worth of free calls to landlines in more than 60 countries.

Game off?

Outside of a brief interlude from Windows head Julie Larson-Green who demonstrated Hal: Spartan Assault on the new tablets, gaming was scarcely mentioned by Surface head Panos Panay.

Despite the lack of RT in the name of either new tablet, the Surface 2 runs Windows RT and is - for all intents and purposes - the successor to the Surface RT, running Windows 8.1 RT.

As was the case before, the RT version of the OS prevents users from installing desktop programs, instead focusing on apps available on the Store.

On that note, both the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 will have access to a library of apps that Panay claims has now topped 100,000. Surface 2 will retail from $449/£359, with the Surface Pro 2 coming in at $899/£719.

Pre-orders for both tablets are available now, with the official launch penciled in for 22 October in 22 initial markets, including the UK, US, Australia, France, Germany and Canada, among others.
