Samsung claims a record 300 million handset sales in 2011

Up 20 million on 2010

Samsung claims a record 300 million handset sales in 2011
The biggest OEM on Android according to most available measures, Samsung now has revealed its handset sales in 2011 are set to top 300 million.

The claim was made by JK Shin, head of the firm's mobile communications business, who has confirmed the figure represents an all-time high for the Korean manufacturer.

Year to remember

"We are incredibly proud of this record-breaking sales milestone and have exceeded the annual target announced early this year, which is testament to the enduring appeal of Samsung phones with consumers around the world," Shin said in a statement.

"We look forward to extending this success going into 2012."

Much of those units will have been sold in Q4 2011, with Samsung announcing in November it expected to beat its quarterly shipment targets thanks, in part, to the strength of the firm's Galaxy S II.

Indeed, most analysts believe Samsung is now the world's largest smartphone manufacturer, having shipped more than 20 million units to retail in its most recent quarter according to Strategy Analytics.

In 2010, it sold 280 million devices.
