Following on from a similar exercise yesterday from IDC, Gartner has released its prediction of smartphone OS market share for 2010, 2011 and 2014.
It predicts Symbian will remain the market leader, just.
By the end of 2010, Gartner reckons the OS will be on 107 million devices, or 40.1 percent of the market. This will rise to 264 million devices and 30.2 percent market share by the end of 2014.
Breathing down its neck however is Android.
Predicted at 47 million devices (17.7 percent) at the end of 2010, by 2014 it will have 29.6 percent of the market with 259 million devices.
Runners and riders
In terms of other platforms, iOS is expected to take third place from RIM by 2011, having a 14.9 percent market share up in 2014, compared to 15.4 percent by the end of 2010.
Gartner doesn't think much of the chances of Windows Phone 7 though, dropping its share from 4.7 percent in 2010 to 3.9 percent in 2014, and positioning it behind Nokia and Intel's MeeGo by 2014.
Gartner explained it expected manufacturers such as Samsung to launch budget Android devices in the second half of 2010 driving the OS into mass market segments.
Combined with a similar strategy from Sony Ericsson, LG and Motorola, this would ensure Android becomes the top OS in North America by the end of 2010.
