As anyone who has watched one of their parents, or even grandparents, while away the hours playing Angry Birds or Cut the Rope will attest, mobile games have undoubtedly widened the appeal of the industry as a whole.
A new report by Park Associates backs up this sentiment, with the firm's study concluding the number of older games has doubled since 2007, largely down to the popularity of smartphones.
Digital D-Day
"Consumers have become increasingly used to portability for all types of media, especially games," said research analyst Pietro Macchiarella of the results.
"Apple's App Store and new services such as Amazon Android App store and Sony PlayStation Suite increasingly facilitate digital distribution of games on all these devices."
In all, the report concludes around half of all households with internet access in the US play games on their handsets.
Family fun
Particularly of note, Macchiarella attests, is the appeal of Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja and Words With Friends.
The ease at which people can download and engage with such releases has ensured those who would usually shun play on PC or console have been welcomed into the fold.
"Portable gaming contributes to the enormous changes already happening in the gaming industry and creates new threats and opportunities for all industry players," Macchiarella concludes.
The report can be downloaded in full from Park Associates' website for a fee of $3,200.
