Amazing as it sounds, an financial company has - in analyst terms - lowballed the current size of the US mobile market.
In keeping with EA's views on the market, SNL Kagan said it expected the US mobile games market to be worth around $1.5 billion in 2011. This would be nearly double its 2010's total, and account for around 8 percent of the total US games market.
According to All Things Digital, report author John Fletcher says revenues in the October-December period will drive the annual total.
He expects it up be up 62 percent year-on-year to $439 million, driven by growth in freemium activity.
His estimate for the top five companies in terms of mobile revenue in Q4 2011 is, in ranking order: 1. EA Mobile, 2. Gameloft, 3. Zynga, 4. Rovio and 5. Glu.
Compare and contrast
In December 2010, EA said it reckoned the entire Americans mobile game market was worth $1 billion, with the European market $700 million and Asia worth $1.7 billion.
SNL Kagan is more bullish about the future, as it went on to say, it predicts mobile games revenues will hit $7.8 billion in 2020.
You can see how this compares with the figures from EA and analysts Juniper and Gartner in the following graph.
