There's excitement in the console game industry this morning, after Electronic Arts revealed it wants to buy fellow publisher Take-Two Interactive for $2 billion.
The aim would be to restore EA's position as the largest console publisher, after being unseated by the recent merger between Vivendi and Activision.
And naturally, the Grand Theft Auto franchise is one of the biggest factors in any negotiation with Take-Two, obviously.
We've already talked about the potential handheld implications of such a deal. But what does it mean for mobile? Well, don't get too excited just yet, but it could be good news. Take-Two doesn't have a clear strategy for taking its games mobile, while EA most certainly does pretty much all its big franchises are coming to the small screen.
If the acquisition does go through, GTA would surely be the first candidate for conversion.
Here's the stumbling blocks: the deal might not go through (Take-Two has rejected the offer); if it does, it'll take a long time for the dust to settle and any mobile game to begin development; and even when it does arrive, it might be a disappointment compared to the complex, free-roaming nature of the console version.
Still, it's nice to speculate, eh?
